Sushil Kumar Singh (football player) (born 25 June 1984) is an Indian football player. He is currently playing for United Sikkim in the I-League 2nd Division in India as a forward. He is one of the most promising Indian strikers playing in I-League. Though a little raw he has most of the qualities of becoming a good striker. He is physically strong and stands 5'11" tall.

Career

Mahindra United
Singh started his footballing career at Mahindra United in the I-League and was one of Mahindra's best players when on the pitch scoring eight goals in eleven games while with Mahindra till Mahindra disbanded.

After Mahindra United disbanded Singh joined another I-League club. This time it was Kingfisher East Bengal F.C.. During his first season with East Bengal in 2010-11 Singh played in five games and scored one goal.

United Sikkim
In July 2011 it was reported that United Sikkim F.C. of the I-League 2nd Division have signed Singh on a one year contract after Singh talked with Baichung Bhutia.

Shillong Lajong
On 25 January 2012 it was announced that Kumar Singh has signed back into the I-League with Shillong Lajong.

International

Sushil has represented the India national football team several times. In 2009, he led the India U-23 team to the SAFF championship where he scored from a free kick against Bangladesh to help India go into the finals and face Maldives.
Sushil scored his third goal for India's seniors against Qatar in India's historic 2-1 victory away from home. He was then selected by India for the 2011 SAFF Championship in which he played in two matches, including the final and scored one goal which came in the final which India won 4-0 over Afghanistan on 11 December 2011.

Sikkim is all geared-up to host Dr. Tao Memorial Football Tournament for the first time. Capital is ready to execute it at its heart in Paljor stadium where eight teams representing North-Eastern Region will face each-other to win the title.

“Dr. Tao Memorial Football Tournament is slated to be held from March 2-9 at Paljor Stadium Complex. The contest has been organized by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department, sponsored by the North Eastern Council (NEC), Shillong”, informed Rapgyal.

“Officials from the concerned departments are engaged in preparation work day-and-night. They are leaving no stone unturned to make the tournament well-ordered and flourishing”, assured the Deputy Director for SYA cum Technical Incharge of Paljor Stadium, Thupden Rapgyal to Sikkim Mail.

Since 2003, the year tournament started, different NE States are hosting it rotationally. Guwahati was the first place to host this tournament, informed Rapgyal.

Adding further, he stated that a total of eight teams namely Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland including Sikkim have buckled-up to participate in the contest.

When asked about the main rationale of organizing the football event, he said that the reason behind it is to discover the hidden talents of NE region. “A generous cash prize of Rs. seven lakhs shall be handed over to the winner of tournament during, whereas first runner up will receive a cash prize of five lakhs. Besides, a compensation prize of Rs. 50,000 each will also be given to all the participant teams.

“It will be interesting to see players of other NE states playing against Sikkim’s team. Only Sikkimese players will be allowed to represent state’s team”, he informed. Dr. Tao, a former football international player was also a professional MBBS doctor from Nagaland. He was a magnificent player, as well as the captain of Mohan Bagan team. He also played in Olympics. He is considered to be one of the best players in North-Eastern Region. This tournament is devoted to him only.

“This competition is very essential and valued for the state. We hope to emerge as victorious. We are also expecting good number of spectators to come and enjoy the tournament in their leisure hours as well as the tourist”, he anticipated.

The main motive is to promote and improve the standards of the game so that they can give maximum exposure to the Indian Footballers. The investment in the two clubs aims to establish a platform for Indian Footballers so that they can showcase their talents at the global level.

Anglian Holdings :

Anglian Holdings, a young and dynamic multi-national company is widely known for its passion and interest towards energy, real estate, commodities, sports, steel processing, arts and cosmetics. It is headquartered in Dubai with offices in Delhi, Dubai and Switzerland. The most important aspect of the company is to create a synergy between various global aspects with the aim to promote Indian skills and technology through their company’s extensive network.

However, Anglian Holdings, an NRI-owned multi-national corporation with diverse global investments, announced in a press conference held today in Park Hotel Kolkata, the acquisition of stakes in Shillong Lajong FC, one of the most prominent football club from Shillong, Meghalaya. The company projected its recent investment publicly in the Denmark-based football club, FCV Vikings with the prime objective of developing a pipeline for bi-directional exchange of talent, knowledge and expertise between the two clubs.

The two clubs formally entered into an agreement with the exchange of the team jerseys by FC Vestsjaelland president Kurt Anderson and SLFC General Secretary M Larsing Sawyan. However, Mr. Dhruv Ratra , CEO-Sports &Marketing,Anglain Holdings was also present during thr press conference and said “Our association with football stems from our deep-rooted passion for the sport that all of us at Anglian share, coupled with the desire of seeing Indians complete and do well at the highest levels. We should be actively looking at scouting, training and promoting Indian football talent, using Shillong Lajong FC and FCV Vikings as channels to take Indian football to the world”.

The General Secretary of SLFC said that, it is a great boost for the Indian football because this is the first time that there is an FDI which will help build Lajong into an institution, make them better and thus, making Lajong more competitive. He also believes that the club will continue to give its best to promote football not only in the North Eastern Region but across the nation. He hopes that this agreement will also help in bringing a change in the football scene in India. He concluded by saying that this will also strengthen the relations between India and Denmark and North East India in particular and hopes that the fans will be proud in the years to come with this initiative and collaboration.

Anglian Holdings Chief Executive Advisor Sandeep Narang said that,” the company will be working together to provide a platform for young Indian footballers to have access to skills, technology and experience of professional football with the purpose of taking talented footballers to European Leagues. He also informed that the tie up finally took place after an intense study, research and survey of all the I League teams including some from the 2nd Division before deciding to collaborate with Shillong Lajong FC because they believe that Mr. Larsing M Sawyan and his family are immensely devoted to the cause of developing football and also is aware that Shillong is the football capital of India with a very strong fan following and support towards the sport and also the club.
Kurt Anderson, President, FCV Vikings has a broad vision and has immense faith in SLFC and Indian Footballers in particular to compete at the highest level internationally. He also said that Indian Footballers need the technical know- how, the right training and the right kind of atmosphere so that they can be groomed and exposed to the best coaching staff and training facility. The main purpose of this agreement is to build a strong relationship between India and Denmark. The club has high hopes and believes that in the next five to seven years they will be able to provide players with a strong background with special reference to excellent training facilities and a more mature understanding of the game. Anglian is also interested in investing on young talented footballers who are ambitious and build them from the lower level to a higher level. He has also expressed his desires to bring FCV Vikings and host world class sporting events in the country. He is immensely interested in taking the coaches and Indian footballers to Denmark, to provide them an opportunity to get proper training and play for the club in the Danish Premiere League He is also planning to bring FCV Vikings to play against SLFC in Shillong in order to have a clearer understanding of each player’s potential including their strengths and weaknesses .The company’s major initiative is youth development and their main intention is to look for talent and provide them with proper training in order to build a stronger national team and introduce young footballers to a new world.

NEW DELHI: A new match, a new look team; the fate nevertheless stayed the same. India went down to Azerbaijan 0-3 in an second International Friendly played at the Rugby 7s Stadium in Dubai.

Like it happened in the last match against Oman, India conceded as early as the 3rd minute. Goalkeeper Subhasis Roychowdhury’s faulty clearance fell to a roving Nidirov Vugar who blasted it in from the top of the box.

The second goal came two minutes prior to the interval. This time, Mahir Shukurov was brought down inside the box by Raju Gaikwad, who was flashed the yellow card. Shukurov gleefully converted from the spot.

Hasiyev Nizami scored Azerbaijan’s third goal in the 82nd minute.

The Indians weren’t able to overcome the setback of conceding an early goal. In the first half, there wasn’t much cohesion in the midfield and the back-four were kept busy all throughout. There were occasions when India counter-attacked but weren’t able to take a shot at the goal -- rival goalkeeper Achayev Kamran staying a mere spectator for the first 45 minutes.

Changing ends, there was a bit more purpose in the midfield. A Francis Fernandes cross saw Kamran palming away a Joaquim Abranches’ header in the 52nd minute. But Azerbaijan slowed down the pace of the game. A Sushil Singh free-kick from just outside the box and a couple of corners weren’t enough to make an impact. The momentum faded away after a brief spell.

On the contrary, Azerbaijan pressed hard and were eventually rewarded with their third goal in 82nd minute.

The Indian Team wore black armbands as a matter of respect to the legendary Former India Captain Sailendra Nath Manna who passed away on Monday morning. A minute’s silence was also observed on the field prior to the kick-off.

This was India’s last preparatory match ahead of their campaign in the AFC Challenge Cup to be held in Kathmandu in March. India play Tajikistan in their first match at the AFC Challenge Cup on March 9.

The Indian Team would be returning back to Delhi from their Preparatory Camp in Dubai on March 3rd and proceeding to Kathmandu the next day.

AIFF Condoles Sailen Manna's death

The All India Football Federation condoles the demise of former India Captain Sailendra Nath Manna. Manna who Captained India to the inaugural Asian Games Football Gold in Delhi in 1951 passed away on Monday (February 27) morning. He was 87 and is survived by his wife and daughter.

Manna made his debut against France in the London Olympics in 1948. Four years later, he Captained India in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. Besides being conferred the Padma Shri in 1971, he was also declared the AIFF Player of the Millennium in 2000. He stays the sole Asian to be named among the 10 best Captains in the World by the English FA in 1953. He represented India in 14 International Matches and was the first Indian footballer to Captain India in two back-to-back Asian Games.

He also Coached the Indian National Team in the 1961 and the 1968 Merdeka Cup.
Mr. Praful Patel, the President of the All India Football Federation in his message said: “It’s sad to hear that Sailen Manna, one of the Greatest Footballers is no more. His contribution to Indian Football will never be forgotten. I share the grief.”

Mr. Kushal Das, the General Secretary of the All India Football Federation said: “Sailen Manna will be alive in his achievements. He was a legendary footballer and someone who has been the inspiration of so many generations. May he rest in Peace.”

As a mark of respect, the AIFF Flag flies at half mast at the AIFF Headquarters -- the Football House in Dwarka, New Delhi. The Indian National Football Team will also be wearing black armbands in their International Friendly against Ajerbaijan.

At the domestic level, Manna won the Calcutta Football League, the Durand Cup, the IFA Shield and the Rovers Cup with Mohun Bagan. He stays the most successful Captain for Bengal in the Santosh Trophy.

NEW DELHI: He doesn’t play but bears all the brunt; he doesn’t play but fingers are pointed at him. The trend worldwide stays the same – National Coach Savio Medeira stays no exception.

Less than 90 days ago, Savio and his ‘Blue’ had convincingly won the SAFF Championship at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium -- a tournament where a Blue-eyed boy of the ‘Blue’ won five consecutive Man-of-the-Match awards. A lot of transition has taken place in the ‘Blue’ since then. Defender extraordinary Mahesh Gawli and creative midfielder par excellence Climax Lawrence have announced their International Retirements and Savio backed a new look ‘Blue’ for the AFC Challenge Cup.

At the moment, very few stays willing to count with Savio; we don’t mind though. None among Nirmal Chhetri, Syed Rahim Nabi, Rocus Lamare, Lalrindika Ralte, Clifford Miranda and Sunil Chhetri started against Oman in the last International Friendly in Muscat. Add to that Jeje Lalpeklua; even if you all of a sudden remember that Subrata Pal is no more synonymous with the National Team any more as he has been missing from action for so long. Missing so many first-team players against Oman was a bad omen indeed.
“This is what football is all about. We need to be patient. The new boys will settle down,” Savio says, only to repeat: “But we need to be patient.”

Against Oman, ranked 95, “there were defensive lapses.” Against Azerbaijan, ranked 109, “we have to correct our mistakes,” Savio stresses. After all, this is India’s last International match prior to the AFC Challenge Cup.

For the record, India haven’t played Azerbaijan ever – this will be the first meeting among the two teams, that too at a neutral venue. “They are a strong side and we know they will come hard at us,” Savio added.
Savio is yet to decide on his starting XI. Midway into the season, it’s understandable, there are niggles and that puts Savio in a Catch 22 situation. “The intention stays to try as many players as possible,” he insists. But with India’s first match in the AFC Challenge Cup staying less than two weeks away, he may not be willing to take that risk which may rule out anyone from the AFC Challenge Cup.

Not many would want to put oneself in Savio Medeira’s shoes at the moment.

A regular at one of the most renowned football clubs in the country, Mohun Bagan; a nomination for the Hero India Sports Award (HISA), 2005; a ?Footballer of the year? award by All India Football Federation in 2003; gifting Manipur its maiden Santosh Trophy in 2002 ? 24-year-old Wangkheirakpam Tomba Singh?s achievements have been many. But ?Golden Tomba? promises that there is a lot more to come.

The young Manipur footballer earned the ?golden? epithet when his golden goal against Kerala in Imphal brought the Santosh Trophy to Manipur for the first time in 2002.

That goal made the front page of all Manipuri dailies and booked Tomba a place with Goan football giant, Salgaocar.

Currently enjoying a break after the National Football League, Tomba is in Manipur on leave and spoke to Atom Samarendra on his future plans and the prospects of the game in the state. Excerpts:

On his being nominated for the HISA:

I?ve not been officially informed about the nomination. I came to know that I?m in the running for this year?s awards only from newspaper reports.

However, I?m very glad that my efforts are being recognised. But whether I?ll get the award or not is a different question altogether.

On the AFC?s Vision India Football Project being implemented in Manipur:

I have little knowledge about what exactly the project envisages. Nevertheless, I feel the project will help in developing the game in the state.

Present status of football in the state:

Manipur has produced many talented footballers.

However, it is unfortunate that the state does not send a single club to play in the country?s most prestigious tournament, the National Football League.

The problem, I feel, is the lack of sponsor to nurture football clubs. That is the reason why many talented players migrate from Manipur to play for bigger clubs in Goa or Calcutta.

The future of the game here will be very bright if enough facilities are provided in the home state.

On his future career plans:

I will leave no stone unturned to play with a foreign club.

On the prospect of being employed:

I received many job offers but I declined them. I have plenty of football left to play and I want to concentrate on my game for the present.

NEW DELHI: A day after India’s International Friendly against Oman, the Indian National Team reached Dubai from Muscat on Friday (January 24) afternoon. The squad would be based in Dubai till March 3 for the Preparatory Camp which includes another International Friendly against Azerbaijan on February 27. Chief Coach Savio Medeira spoke at length to www.the-aiff.com on his team’s plans, the match against Oman and the forthcoming AFC Challenge Cup. EXCERPTS:

What went wrong against Oman?

We conceded two goals within three minutes and that upset our rhythm. Some of the boys made their debut and it took them some time to get started. Midway into the first half, the boys settled down and started combining well. But the start spoiled it for us.

What plans do you have to mend your defence?

There were defensive lapses in the game and we have to correct our mistakes. The back four which played together for the first time and it’s understandable they will take some to get that combination right between themselves.

Do you have any changes in mind for the next International Friendly against Azerbaijan on February 27?

Absolutely! I had agreed to play two International Friendlies knowing that both the teams would be tough opponents and stronger than us. The intention is to try out as many players in these two International Friendlies.

What are the positives which you take out from Oman match?

Oman are a strong side. Playing against such teams gives that added confidence to the boys prior to a crucial tournament like the AFC Challenge Cup. The manner and the attitude displayed as we regrouped even after conceding those early goals needs to be appreciated. We need to remember that we took the field without five of our regulars.

There are a lot of players who are recovering at the moment. What’s the status of injuries of the players? Would they get fit prior to the AFC Challenge Cup?

They are recovering and are being monitored by the medical staff. I will take a call on their selection before we leave for Delhi.
