New Delhi, Dec 18: The top two teams were dealt body blows in a riveting eleventh round of the I League which also saw 12 goals in a single match.
If table toppers Dempo succumbed to one of their heaviest defeats going down to Pune FC 1-5, second placed East Bengal lost for the first time this season to city rivals Prayag United by a solitary goal from Ranti Martins.
Churchill Brothers cashed in to leapfrog to the second position and go level on points with Dempo who in spite of the defeat remained top owing to head to head record. The Goan outfit beat Sporting Clube de Goa 8-4 in a match which was a see-saw affair till the final whistle.
Under new coach Oscar Barreras, Sporting had taken the lead after levelling 1-1 in the 20thminute, courtesy an Ogba Kalu strike. Joseph Pereira negated Bineesh Balan’s, strike in the opening exchanges of the match in the 34th minute. But Churchill restored parity four minutes later through Balan and from then on it was all Churchill Brothers.
Balan completed his hat-trick five minutes from half time with Henry Antchouet making it 4-2
going into the break. The script did not change until the 90th minute of the game. Roberto Mendes Silva scored a brace and Henry Antchouet doubled his tally minutes into the second half to make it 8-2 for Churchill. Joseph Pereira and Seiya Sugishita reduced the margin to give last minute blues to the hosts.
In the other tie in Goa, till half time, it was all square at 1-1. Joachim Abranches and James Moga had scores for Dempo and Pune FC respectively. Things changed unpredictably and drastically post the breather as James Moga scored his second minutes after the restart and his side did not look back since then. Arata Izumi, Jeje Lalpekhlua and skipper Douhou Pierre got their names in the score sheet to register a historic win for Pune FC.
In other matches, Mumbai FC returned to winning ways after suffering a reversal against Air India in the tenth round. Khalid Jamil’s boys got the better of United Sikkim who played under newly appointed Australian coach Nathan Hall, 1-0. The Pilots on the other hand were held to a 1-1 draw by Shillong Lajong in a tense mid table clash.
Match No. 72 between Mohun Bagan and Pailan Arrows stayed deferred till further notice due to unavoidable circumstances.
