East Bengal favourites against lowly United Sikkim

KOLKATA, May 7: After playing five consecutive draws that spoiled their title chances East Bengal would seek to get a win and stem a drift in the league standings. This was the mood of the home side before their rescheduled 23rd round I-League match against United Sikkim FC, which happens at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday (May 8).

“We do not have much stake in the tournament having seen the title chances drift away with a draw in the previous match. With two matches to go we would definitely try to earn the maximum points and try to finish second in the tournament,” said Trevor James Morgan, the East Bengal coach.

East Bengal are currently third in the table with 44 points from 24 matches and they will have to wait for Pune FC’s (currently second with 49 points from 25 matches) results to retain the runners-up position they held last year, said Morgan.

The East Bengal coach said despite his team losing out on the title race the players will give their best to make a positive finish.

“Everyone’s a professional footballer and knows his job. They know they will have to give their best for their team and they will do it to the best of their ability,” said the East Bengal coach. “Winning the match will be our only objective and we would like to get back the rhythm and finish on a bright note,” he added.

United Sikkim SC, who have already been relegated, will be looking to bow out with honour. That is what their coach Nathan Hall said after the team’s brief practice. “For a side that has been relegated there is nothing much to gain but we would like to show that we were no pushovers by producing a good result. I would try to boost up the players mentally and see that they give their best in the match,” said Hall.

The coach informed that two of his injured defenders Anwar Ali and Sandesh Jhingan are fit and ready for selection. The availability of the players would bolster the defence, which had been the team’s primary worry in last few rounds that they lost. United Sikkim are at the bottom of the table with 15 points from 24 matches.
