Prayag United beat ONGC 3-1

KALYANI, May 11: Prayag United SC ended their I-League campaign on a winning note when they beat ONGC FC 3-1 in the concluding round in the Kalyani Stadium on Saturday. 

Ranty Martins, the highest scorer so far in the tournament, added two more to his tally while Kayne Vincent scored one to complete the tally for Prayag United. Fanai Lalmuanpuia pulled one back for ONGC.

Playing with the intent to win Prayag United put pressure on ONGC from the start and got into the scoring act in the 29th minute, off a penalty. The penalty came up after the Prayag’s Kiwi striker Kayne Vincent was brought down inside the box.

Ranty Martins found the back of net from the spot to give the home side the lead. Prayag held on the lead till the added-time of the first half when Ranti scored his second (45+1) to double their lead. Ranti scored after Shylo Malswamtluanga set him off with a nice through-ball, which the former slotted past an onrushing ONGC goalkeeper Rehenesh TP.

Prayag United continued their dominance after the change of ends and earned some more scoring opportunities. This helped them enhance the tally even further in the 57th minute. Dipak Mondal made a fine overlapping run and essayed a brilliant cross that was headed home by Kayne Vincent. As Prayag looked to be resting on a three-goal cushion, ONGC found the lone reply off a free-kick, which was sent home by Fanai Lalmuanpuia in the 71st minute.

Prayag United finished fourth with 44 points from 26 matches while ONGC FC remained ninth with 31 points gained from their 26 matches.
