Quao fires as Mumbai scores third win of season

PUNE, Nov 28: Defender Evans Quao struck the lone goal of the match as Mumbai FC defeated ONGC FC 1-0 to register its third win of the season, in the Round VIII match of the I-League football championship at the Balewadi Stadium on Wednesday.

In a match that saw one red card and five yellow cards being pulled out over rough play and arguments over apparent head-butting, Mumbai FC kept it simple by attacking ONGC throughout before Gabriel Fernandes found an opening to set up Quao in the 73rd minute.

The win helped Mumbai FC to consolidate its points tally to 10, but they stay on No 8 position while the ONGC remain at No 13 with five points.

Both teams opened with end to end play before ONGC eked out a set piece opportunity in the seventh minute, but the ball was headed in wide posing no threat to goalkeeper Luis Barreto.

Mumbai FC used the long ball technique to turn defense into attack quickly in the 10th minute as Faizal Rahman’s long balls turned into constant threats for ONGC defenders, who played deep.

Then a fouled by Ashutosh Mehta on Yusa Katsumi in the 14th minute near the half line got the Japanese into focus. More attack followed when James Singh fired one straight into Katsumi’s face forcing the referee to call in for medical help.

By the Quao slowly started making his mark on the match with a well taken ball on the chest and a shot at goal that went wide in the 23rd minute.

Evans was once again in the thick of things with a volley in the 27th minute after great work from Subhash Chakraborty and James down the flanks. Then Katsumi got involved with Ashutosh Mehta, who lay flat on the ground and other Mumbai FC players cornering the Japanese. Referee had to intervene before he pulled out the red card, but Katsumi refused to budge and kept on arguing.

On changing the ends, Mumbai kept a steady stream of forays before Gabriel sneak through the defence and found Quao in position. The Ghanaian made no mistake as he took the ball half-volley and fired into the nettings past the ONGC goalkeeper Prasanjit Ghosh in the 73rd minute.
