East Bengal breeze past Mumbai FC

KOLKATA: Kingfisher East Bengal came back from behind to breeze past Mumbai FC 3-1 at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan on Friday to move to 41 points in the I-League Table. Mumbai FC stay on 17 points.

After Nicolas Rodrigues had put Mumbai FC in the lead as early as the 5th minute, East Bengal scored through Tolgay Ozbey (22nd minute), Robin Singh (25th minute) and Edmilson Marques in the 87th minute.

East Bengal’s Nirmal Chettri was adjudged the Man-of-the-Match.

Mumbai FC scored first in the 5th minute when Nicholas Rodrigues blasted home a rasping shot from just inside the box.

But the Red and Gold were quick to bounce back. In the 22nd minute, Tolgay was brought down in the box by Mumbai FC defender Lobo. He stepped up and converted the resultant spot kick to level the score.

It took just 3 minutes more for East Bengal to surge into the lead. This time, Robin Singh trapped a Baljit Sahni pass and put it past the rival goalkeeper – a lead which East Bengal maintained till the interval.

The 2nd half started with both teams creating some chances to score. But East Bengal had the last laugh as it was East Bengal’s substitute striker Edmilson Marques who completed the rout in the 87th minute.
