Amiri inspires Mumbai to season’s first win

PUNE, Nov 9: Defender Haroon Fakruddin Amiri fired an 89th minute winner with a sparkling turn in the box as Mumbai FC registered its first win of the season beating 10-men Sporting Clube de Goal 3-2 in an entertaining encounter at the Balewadi Sports Complex Stadium here on Friday (November 9).

Mumbai FC had rallied well after being 0-2 down and just as the match seemed to end in a draw, Amiri came up with a blinder that surprised Sporting Clube goalkeeper Gerard D’Mello who was facing Amiri’s back and least expected him to be a threat. But the defender, who moved up on every given chance, turned quickly and fired home to score the winner.
The win lifted Mumbai FC to 13th position, while Sporting Clube de Goa stayed at No 11.

Midfielder Anorue Obiora had put Sporting in front in the 13th minute when he chipped in a short pass as the Goans quickly got into the competition more. Five minutes later Dawson Fernandes chipped the ball into the netting from a throw as Sporting Clube appeared to take control of the match.

Mumbai FC quickly regrouped and conducted several raids but were unlucky to get the ball across the hard working D’Mello. In the 25th minute Nicholas Rodrigues had the ball with him at the top of the box and a clear view of the goal. But his left-footer was way too wide of the right post.

Soon after Yusif Yakubu charged up but messed up when D’Mello ran towards him but his pass to Gabriel Fernandes opened up Mumbai’s good luck as the striker made no mistakes in putting the ball in for 1-2.

Mumbai FC found renewed vigour after that goal went took control of the match with more ball possession than the Goan outfit. Just at the stroke of half-time James Singh had an outside chance but he sent the ball in the air.

But in the three minutes of added time, Mumbai found an equalizer when Rodrigues  set up Justin Stephen with a long cross from the right. Stephen headed in into the top corner of the post for 2-2 equaliser.

When the second half began, Mumbai played with much confidence. Both teams bided for an opening, but the frustration of Sporting Clube came out in open when Mathew Gonsalves made a harsh tackle on Haroon Amiri in the 77th minute. The referee CR Sri Krishna had no hesitation in showing the red card reducing Sporting Clube to 10 men.

Abhishek Yadav and Yakubu moved up and created a chance but messed it up in the box despite playing against 10 men. Mumbai FC coach Khalid Jamil did quick thinking to bring out Yakubu and send ND Opara, whose fresh legs did trouble the Sporting defenders.

Two minutes from close Dawson Fernandes missed a chance and Sporting Clube would rue that for a long time.

On the counterattack, Amiri’s fantastic effort sealed the fate of Goan team and handed Mumbai FC their first win.
