It’s a learning curve for Pailan Arrows

New Delhi, Nov 12: Losses stay a part of any developmental process as much as victories. In fact, development is never about results. So when Pune FC ended All India Football Federation developmental side, Pailan’s Arrows’ 10-match unbeaten streak, it was by all means ‘victory in defeat’.

Arrows played like they have so far this season concentrating more on ball possession, a trait that has caught the eyes of many. But at the end of the day, as Head Coach Arthur Papas put it, they paid for not converting their chances. It is all a learning curve for the colts and surely they have learnt a lesson from this match.

If you look at their squad you will find all U-22 boys; most U-19. They don’t have a goal machine like Ranty Martins in their arsenal; nor do experienced hats like a Climax Lawrence or a Mahesh Gawli to guide them on and off the field.

But they have the tactical acumen of Papas and they will take the result in their stride for sure. At present, they stay 6th in the table after five rounds. One must not forget that winning matches is not the sole criterion for Arrows, it is nurturing talent for the future. And, things are surely going in the right direction.

From Arrows to Prayag United SC. Dutch coach Eelco Schattorie could not have asked for a better start as his men in purple literally toyed with United Sikkim Football Club for a marauding 10-1 triumph, I-League’s second biggest win behind Dempo’s 14-0 annihilation of Air India in the 2010-11 season.

Talk of goal fests in Indian football and the name of the Nigerian goal poacher always props up. Ranty Martins had slotted home six during Dempo’s epoch-making win. Now switching allegiance to the cash rich Kolkata outfit, the talismanic marksman has netted five goals in the 10-1 win.

Elsewhere, while Dempo and East Bengal secured facile wins over Shillong Lajong and Air India respectively, Mohun Bagan huffed and puffed against ONGC to a goalless draw. So much so, that ONGC Coach Subrata Bhattacharya commented: “The result proved Mohun Bagan are a one-man team. It’s all about Odafa and Nabi. The day Odafa will score, Bagan will win; the day he won’t, Bagan will fumble.”

Meanwhile, Henri Antchouet came off the bench to score a late winner for Churchill Brothers which helped them edge past local rivals Salgaocar 2-1 in a close encounter at the Fatorda Stadium.

The other nerve-wracking match was Mumbai FC versus Sporting Clube de Goa. The match ended in favour of Mumbai FC who registered their first win of the season beating Sporting 3-2.
