Mohun Bagan edge past Pailan Arrows

KALYANI, March 24: Mohun Bagan managed to hold on to a lone-goal margin against a resurgent Pailan Arrows 3-2 in a closely contested 21st round match of the I-league at Kalyani Stadium on Sunday (March 24).

Mohun Bagan enjoyed the early advantage and established a three-goal lead before Arrows showed great character in pulling back two goals. Mohun Bagan, which is fighting to save relegation, worked on desperation and found the break early in the fifth minute making the most of a set-piece situation. Mohun Bagan defender Aiborlang Khongjee, who had moved up to assist is team, found the net off a Jewel Raja corner that was helped along by Rahim Nabi.

Mohun Bagan, who missed the services of their Nigerian goal-machine Onyeka Okolie Odafa, found their Australian striker Tolgay Ozbey assuming the task of scoring. Tolgay doubled the lead in the 18th minute with a spectacular goal when he shielded his marker and finished a probing-pass from Quinton Jacobs with sharp turn from top of the box.

The Australian striker added another one to Mohun Bagan’s tally in the 20th minute when he latched on to another Jewel Raja corner and found the back of the Arrows net with a snap shot.

Arrows showed great resolve after the early setback and made their way back brilliantly. Prabir Das set up M. Shaijumon with a nice through ball that foxed the opposition defence and set the former up with the opportunity. The Arrows midfielder made no mistake with his placement. Arrows maintained the pressure after the break and found the second goal riding on the initiative.

Seiminlen Dougel measured up to a nice cross from upfront colleague Holicharan Narzary and found the Mohun Bagan net with a net header to get Arrows back in the action. Arrows’ search for the equaliser did not materialise as Mohun Bagan put extra men in their defence and blocked the attempts of the former.
