AIFF Media TeamNew Delhi, April 8: On celluloid, a supporting actor often ends up a show-stealer. Pailan Arrows, a bunch of talented rookies, have done the same in the 23rd Round of I-League.
Scripting a fabled 2-0 triumph over defending champions Dempo SC in the latter’s own backyard, the All India Football Federation developmental side hogged the limelight from table toppers Churchill Brothers who beat contenders Pune FC 2-1 in THE clash of the round.
What made the victory laudable was the way the U-23 boys sans any big name or foreigner dominated the most accomplished outfit.
Arthur Papas, Arrows’ highly rated Australian Coach surely saved his best for the best! And in the 2nd minute of the match itself, it reaped dividends. Holicharan Narzary showed great presence of mind in lapping up the opportunity which befell to him for the second time after his initial header came off the post.
Alwyn George doubled the tally five minutes before the final whistle as Dempo lacked teeth in the second essay after Cresson Antao was booked for the second time in the 54th minute.
Coming to the other significant result of the Round where India Captain Sunil Chhetri’s superb second goal summed up the night for Churchill after Bineesh Balan had come off the bench to give the Goan side the lead in the 54th minute. Pune FC halved the margin through Boima Karpeh but it was too little too late.
Subhash Bhowmick’s side are now five points at the top of the tree. They are sniffing the title and most experts feel, they have already won it unless they lose it themselves.
In another match, Mohun Bagan ended Sporting Clube de Goa’s unbeaten streak as they crushed Oscar Bruzon’s wards 5-1 courtesy a hat-trick from the talismanic striker Odafa Okolie with Tolgay Ozbey netting the other two. The result lifted Bagan from the bottom of the heap to the 13th spot with 16 points from 19 matches.
Elsewhere, Salgaocar got the better of Prayag United by a solitary goal while Mumbai FC steadied their ship after a 3-1 win over lowly Air India. Meanwhile Santosh Kashyap’s swansong with ONGC continued in the mountains as well as they kept Shillong Lajong at bay with a 1-1 stalemate.
