Red-hot Pune FC canter past Mohun Bagan

KALYANI, April 24:  Pune FC put up a confident show to down the local favourites Mohun Bagan 3-1 in the rescheduled 16th round match of the I-League in Kalyani Stadium on Wednesday (April 24). 

Dohou Pierre, James Moga and Karma Tsewang scored once each to give Pune FC the full quota of points from the encounter. Onyeka Okolie Odafa fetched the lone reply for Mohun Bagan late in the added time in the second half.

Pune FC got the first goal keeping constant pressure on the Mohun Bagan defence. The Mohun Bagan citadel fell in the 27th minute on a nice move brought together by Pune FC. Khantang Paite, who did all the hard work in the Pune midfield, set up James Moga with a pass. 

The South Sudanese striker played a dummy setting the ball free for an unmarked Douhou Pierre, who found the back of the Mohun Bagan net. Moga set Karma Tsewang with another piercing pass in the 32nd minute but the Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Shilton Paul made a good save on the latter’s attempt.

Mohun Bagan got their game back later in the first half and made a few good attacks. Amrinder Singh, who manned the Pune FC goal, did an outstanding job saving two good attempts from Mohun Bagan’s the Nigerian striker Odafa to keep preserve the visitors’ lead intact. Amrinder also saved a Biswajit Saha attempt when the Mohun Bagan wing-back came close to scoring in the 40th minute.

Pune FC stepped up their offensive after the interval and found two more goals to ensure their elevation to the second position in the current league standings. The second goal happened in the 65th minute when Douhou Pierre intercepted a pass from Mohun Bagan midfielder Jewel Raja, went up the park and released Moga in the Mohun Bagan territory. 

The latter unleashed a powerful left-footer as the ball hit the crosspiece and landed inside the line. Karma Tsewang trebled Pune FC’s lead in the 77th minute with a neat lob over an onrushing Shilton Paul after the former was set up by a pass from substitute Mumtaz Akhtar.

Odafa, who was contained for the greater part of the match by an alert Pune FC defence, finally broke free in the added time (90+3 minutes) and found the consolation goal with a fine solo effort. Pune FC had 46 points from 24 matches after the win while Mohun Bagan remained on 22 points from 23 matches.
