PUNE, May 11: Having sealed the I-League title and laid their hands on the glittering Trophy Churchill Brothers will go into the season-finale against Air India without any pressure, here at the Balewadi Sports Complex Stadium on Sunday.
It was Sunil Chhetri’s second half strike that helped Churchill draw against the Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan and confirm its No 1 position even before the season’s last league match is played.
Though the Goan champions will like the scenario wherein they are not pressured to win against Air India, the Mariano Dias-coached team would like to end the season on a winning note.
Pune city, however, will miss being playing host to the trophy-giving ceremony as Churchill was already handed over the trophy in Goa early this week. It had become clear that the No 2 placed team, Pune FC, would not overhaul the tally of Churchill, who also had better head-to-head performance.
Churchill Brothers are on 52 points, while Air India is languishing at No 13 position with 19 points.
For Air India’s Henry Ezeh and Elijah Junior, it would be their last hurrah for Air India as the Nigerians would be keenly eyeing the transfer window and move to an elite club for the next season.
Churchill Brothers on the other hand would hope to put the thoughts together and look for a win and end the season on a high. There is otherwise nothing more to hope for with the title already decided and carefully tucked in the trophy cabinet.
