IMPHAL, October 30: A two days tribal friendly football exhibition match, having hill district people's representatives (MLAs) as team members/players got underway at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh gracing the inaugural programme as the chief guest and formally declaring the event opened on Tuesday by hosting the flag of Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM), organisers of the exhibition matches.
According to a TYCM release, the event is being organised under the objective of promoting peaceful and friendly relationships amongst all the communities of Manipur with the theme 'Sports for building peace and unity'. Expressing hope that the football exhibition match will be time for introspection and retrospection for all concerned, TYCM also conveyed strong resentment that inspite of 34 tribal communities out of Manipur's total of 36 communities the elected tribal representatives are the minority group in the 60 member State assembly. The Council also accused successive State Governments of not letting HAC function according to provisions of the Indian Constitution which provides special provision for the tribal people.
