Lajong captain John D MenyongarIt was a creditable performance from Mohun Bagan because beating Lajong in their own den is a very difficult task. Bagan also missed the services of Sunil Chetri and Syed Rahim Nabi who are busy with the national team.
Bagan started with Okolie Odafe as the single forward. And coach Prashanta Banerjee defended the move. “It was a deliberate move since it was an away match. Also we wanted Jose Ramirez Barreto in the midfield.” Quite right since Barreto has been a revelation playing deep.
Lajong played better football on the day creating some chances but poor finishing let them down. Midway through the second half, Lalram Luaha nearly scored one but the former Mohun Bagan player’s volley hit the crosspiece.
Bagan also had a few chances but Lajong goalkeeper Soram Poirei Anganba was outstanding under the bar.
Lajong captain John D Menyongar, who was adjudged Man of the Match, said he was happy with the team’s performance.
“We played well. We created some chances but failed to convert. This is part of the game. Sometimes you score, sometimes you do not.”
