North Eastern lift champions trophy


Imphal, Dec. 11: North Eastern Reorganisation and Cultural Association claimed the champions title of the 55th Sir Churchand Singh KCSI, CBE Memorial Football Tournament at Khuman Lampak main stadium, defeating Assam Rifles Soccer by 4-2 goals during penalty shootout.

This is the North Eastern team’s second title of the four appearances in the final.

The win fetched them Rs 1 lakh and the trophy while Assam Rifles collected Rs 50,000 and the runners-up trophy.

Assam Rifles player M. Kamei executed a powerful grounder in the 72nd minute that caught North Eastern keeper M. Raj napping.

However, North Eastern earned a free kick from the left flank in the 74th minute when M. Ashok shot straight to keeper S. Lokeshore. The keeper fumbled and H. Chakravorti pushed home the equaliser.
In tiebreak, Assam Rifles player Ajitkumar Singh was the only one to convert his kick. For North Eastern, M. Ashok, Kh. Satish and Th. Roshan found the target.

North Eastern also walked away with the Fair Play title, Man of the Final match for Ng. Tomarjit and Best Defender title for M. Ashok.

Assam Rifles also landed two individual awards with L. Thoithoiba and M. Kamei getting the Best Midfielder and Best Striker with cash awards.

The Best Goalkeeper title was bagged by S. Premkumar of NISA while Ksh. Kanta of MPSC, Thangkhosem of USA and L. Gouro of AIM shared the Topscorer award for their three goals each.

Awards: NISA medios L. Nabachandra Singh and Th. Tababi Devi of Manipur Police Sports Club have been named Best Male and Female footballers of 2011 and awarded Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000.
S. Premkanta Singh, the coach of Southern Sporting Union was named the Best coach of the year 2011.
