PUNE: Pune FC pulled off a remarkable win despite going down late in the first-half against Prayag United SC to leapfrog two places in the League standings after a 2-1 win in the I-League match at the Balewadi Sports Complex.

Yasif Yakubu had put Prayag United ahead in the 41st minute with a blinder from about 30 yards which Pune FC custodian Amrinder Singh least expected, but the Man-of-the-Match Keita Mandjou headed in an equaliser four minutes into the second half to bring the home team back on track.

Both Keita and Douhou Pierre worked relentlessly upfront and created several chances as Prayag felt the heat, before Karma Tsewang scored the winner in the 71st minute to send the crowd into delirious celebrations.

With three full points from this match, Pune FC moved to 34 points while Prayag United stayed on 32 points as the League takes 40-odd-day break before restarting on March 24.

The match was even with both teams willing to take chances rather than being too defensive as they dished out an entertaining contest. Out of nothing, a long pass in the Pune FC box saw Yakubu outjump defender Caitano Costa and on the move he controlled the ball and took a shot past Amrinder to the left corner for Prayag’s goal.

Just before that Gurjinder Singh had missed a close shot after having beaten Arnab Mondal with a side step in collecting a Keita’s through ball. Gurjinder’s right-footed shot sailed inches wide of the post.

On resumption, Pune FC showed their aggressive side and raised the tempo. In the 49th minute, Othallo Tabia’s long throw landed high in the box. The ball bounced off a defender and came on to Keita, who nodded it into the goal from couple of yards out for 1-1.

On the left wing Karma Tsewang stayed the livewire whom Prayag failed to douse. He kept prodding with incisive sprints that threatened Prayag United goal on several occasions. In the 67th minute, Arata Izumi played a perfect dummy to set up Karma, but he failed to take advantage.

But four minutes later, Karma made amends – this time beating the off-side trap, controlling a Gurjinder through and placing it past Prayag goalkeeper Jagroop Singh.  (Source: AIFF)
