This 20-year-old journey from the outer reaches of the north-east to playing as a pro at PFC has been a long one. Rolling Son started off playing the game as a 10-year-old playing for his school team in Ukhrul, a beautiful town in the state of Manipur.
However playing football in Manipur, according to Rolling Son, had its disadvantages. There were no proper facilities, no proper warm ups, less playing time and generally a much lower workload than what one would get at other places in India.
His footballing career, though, started off playing for his school team and he played the Under-17 school games held in Jammu and Kashmir in 2005, representing Ukhrul Higher Secondary School. He quit academics in 2005 and went to the capital city of Imphal to further his game where he played for NISA.
Rolling Son stocky build meant that he was a cinch as a defender and it was just that position he started off playing, manning the centre of the defenders’ line. His skills – dead-sure chest control and shooting ability – being an added plus to his role in the team.
Rolling Son has played for Manipur at the Under-19 levels and was also called for the national Uder-19 camp which was held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Trivia: He chipped a tooth at practice at the camp.
Quite appropriately, Rolling Son admires state-mate Baichung Bhutia amongst Indian footballers, mainly because Bhutia will give it all in his game. Another footballer that he likes is Deco.
When Rolling Son is not sweating it out on the football field he enjoys a game of badminton and basketball too. He also loves listening to country music with Don Williams being a special favourite. At age 17, Kamaljeet joined the ranks of J & K Bank along the way playing for J & K Under-16, Under-19 and Under-21s. He also represented the state in the Santosh Trophy in 2007 when he was spotted by Mumbai FC scouts and later signed him on. The move to pro changed his approach completely. It also brought him the most memorable moment of his footballing career to date when Mumbai FC beat JCT 3-2 after 0-2 at half time. He was one of the youngest members of the squad and it was a whole new experience.
But a solid left foot and some serious ball skills – both essential for a left back – has meant that Kamaljeet has come a long way. In fact when he was planning to move to Pune FC, Mumbai FC were reluctant to let him go and Mohun Bagan wanted him too. But he chose Pune to be his next and today is ready for his second stint.
