Pailan stays the flavour in I-League

AIFF Media TeamNew Delhi : It is only the second round of the I League and there’s too much on the plate already. And the best part stays, there’s something for everyone.

But the talk of the town stays Pailan Arrows. Arthur Papas’ U-21 boys not only won their first two matches against Mumbai FC and Durand Cup champions Air India, but also won many hearts with their discipline and passing game.

Further, enterprising striker Holicharan Narzary has impressed one and all with his poaching skills as he netted 3 goals in the first two matches so far staying right up in the top goal scorers chart.

Apart from Holicharan, Milan Singh has been impressive as well with his ball control and defence splitting passes.

Elsewhere, while Maharashtra witnessed a thriller, neighbouring Goa bathed in a goal festival as heavyweights Dempo and Churchill Brothers netted five goals each against Sporting local outfit Clube de Goa and newcomers ONGC respectively.

Apart from Dempo SC and Pune FC, Prayag United stay the other team who have won their opening matches in the I-League.

Meanwhile, Federation Cup champions East Bengal got the better of high-flying United Sikkim in a pressure game for both the teams. If East Bengal had to steady their ship after the initial hiccup where they failed to end the stalemate against Sporting Clube de Goa, Bhaichung Bhutia’s USFC had to prove skeptics wrong by winning their second game on the trot after leaving most flabbergasted by beating Salgaocar in the first round.

Talking of Salgaocar, Karim Bencherifa’s wards – one of the most impressive sides in the Federation Cup – are yet to get off the blocks after being held in boisterous Gangtok by Shillong Lajong 1-1.

The ‘Maha’ derby must have delighted the neutrals in the Western part of the country barring the cohorts. A cliffhanger to say the least, the match ended 3-2 in favour of Pune FC with Jeje Lalpekhlua netting the winner in the 75th minute. Mumbai FC failed to capitalise on a 2-1 lead in the first half as Japanese striker Nishiguchi Daisuke scored in each half to cancel out Evans Quao and ND Opara’s goals.

In Kolkata, Prayag United proved two strong for Mohun Bagan when they overcame an early goal deficit to prevail 2-1, a defeat which ran exit bells for Bagan coach Santosh Kashyap.          -
