Arrows aim to contine sensational streak against Pune FC

KOLKATA, Nov 8: When it comes to reaching targets, the Arrows of Arthur Papas have found the bull’s eye in the country’s football seasons so far. The Australian coach has discovered a great way of marshalling the developmental side of the All India Football Federation, which packs some of the best youth footballers of the country.

And that this aspect has inspired the Pailan Arrows to remain unbeaten in the 10 matches they played ever since Papas took over early this season.

This record of the Arrows will definitely play a part when they take on Derrick Pereira’s Pune FC in the fifth round of the I-League at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium on Friday afternoon.

“I have a talented side and all the credit goes to the players for this success. All that I have done is putting the confidence in the players,” Papas said after the Arrows’ practice on the eve of the match. Arrows, who have drawn both their away matches against teams like Salgaocar SC and United Sikkim FC, have a different home record. The team has won both its matches – against Mumbai FC 3-2 and Air India 2-1 – at home and hope look to continue the momentum against Pune FC.

Arrows have gained a nice balance under Papas, who has found some outstanding performers in all the departments, especially in its midfield and attack. With the likes of Alwyn Geroge and Holicharan Narzary in the attack, the Arrows’ midfield is strengthened by the presence of Milan Singh, Souvik Ghosh, Avinabo Bag among others. The Arrows also have a favourable goal difference - scoring five and conceding three – which points to a good defence, which is primarily marshalled by the likes of Deepak Devrani and Prathamesh Maulingkar.

Arrows will be aiming to pick up more points from its third home outing, and add to the eight points that put them in the third place among 14 top teams of the country.

Pune FC coach Pereira lauded the youthful opposition for playing consistently so far. “The Arrows under Arthur Papas have shown lot of maturity. Papas has formed them into a unit that can challenge any opposition in the tournament,” Pereira, who has guided Pune FC since its inception, said. Pune FC, who made a great start winning  back-to-back matches at home before faltering in the next two rounds with identical 0-1 losses against East Bengal (away) and Churchill Brothers (home), now have the challenge of getting their winning rhythm back.
While missing defender Caitano Costa and seasoned midfielder S. Venkatesh because of suspension and injury, Pune FC have a full cast of foreigners including Chika Wali, James Moga, Dohou Pierre and Uchi Daisuke.

With the India striker Jeje Lalpekhlua one of their key man in attack, Pune FC has been hit by a goal drought in the last two matches. Pereira hoped that his team will regain the scoring touch and get back the winning rhythm accordingly. Pune has six points from four matches.
