Salgaocar ready for Churchill test

MARGAO, Nov 8: Salgaocar Sports Club are confident that they can get the desired result against Churchill Brothers Sports Club in a I-League clash at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Friday.

Salgaocar have a new coach, David Booth, at the helm of affairs for the past three days, and technical director Peter Valles has no doubt that the team is now on the right track.

“We won our last match against Mumbai FC and that is a positive sign. The players too are responding well to the new coach,” said Valles.

Booth took over the team three days ago following the shock resignation of Karim Bencherifa who is expected to join Mohun Bagan later this month.

The match against Mumbai FC was Salgaocar’s first win in four matches but coach David Booth was sitting in the stands. On Friday, Booth will sit on the technical bench of Salgaocar Sports Club for the first time.

“Booth is an experienced coach and knows how to handle the team. I can tell for sure that the players are responding well to his coaching methods and I am sure that we will continue with our winning ways,” said the technical director.

Churchill -- nine points from four matches and placed second -- will be severely tested as they come up against local rivals Salgaocar.

Churchill started with a loss against defending champions Dempo Sports Club, despite dominating for most part. Subhash Bhowmick’s men, however, fought back with three consecutive victories, but it will be a clash against Salgaocar that could prove to be the most difficult.

“I have always said that there cannot be any easy games in the I-League but Salgaocar will be especially difficult because they are a strong side,” said Bhowmick.

Bhowmick is likely to field an unchanged team from the one that defeated Pune FC by a solitary goal in the last match at Pune.
