East Bengal reign supreme so far

Kolkata, Nov 30: Trysts with fortune, grinding out results are two important attributes you commonly associate with a Champion side in any sport. On Tuesday afternoon in the eighth round of I-League against former champions Salgoacar SC, East Bengal consolidated their position at the top of the table by defeating the former by a solitary goal. And on display were the two above mentioned characteristics.

In an evenly contested battle at the Salt Lake Stadium, Trevor James Morgan’s wards latched onto a 66th minute strike from talismanic striker Chidi Edeh – playing against his former employers – who found the back of the net with a rasping right-footer that went in off a deflection off substitute Collin Abranches thus foxing goalkeeper Karanjit Singh.

The other Kolkata teams also didn’t enjoy a good round. Mohun Bagan went down tamely to defending champions Dempo SC 0-3. Statistics reveal, Bagan have conceded 23 goals in their last 7 I-League outings against Dempo. Dempo in the process maintained the pressure on East Bengal clinging on to their second place with 19 points to red and gold’s 20.

Star-studded Prayag United also suffered a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Churchill Brothers.

In Shillong, Pailan Arrows went down to Shillong Lajong 1-3. The Arrows had their chances in the last 25 minutes and even hit the bas twice besides missing a couple form close. Coach Arthur Papas’ FB status after the match read: Just not good enough today at critical times in the game, congrats to Shillong Lajong and also the city for putting on such a fantastic atmosphere! Need to regroup quickly and move forward.

Meanwhile, Air India and United Sikkim dished out a high-scoring thriller which ended 3-3. Air India’s Elija Junior converted from the spot in injury time to make it 3-3 to earn a point for his side.

In the other two encounters, both Pune FC and Mumbai FC maintained their winning streak overwhelming Sporting Clube de Goa 2-1 and ONGC 1-0 respectively.
