Sporting seek to mend fences against Pune FC

MARGAO, Nov 26: Sporting Clube de Goa technical director Alex Alvares has warned his side they must start winning consistently or risk making “things uncomfortable” for them towards the later stages of the I-League.

Sporting Clube have been hugely inconsistent in this year’s I-League. They started with a goalless draw against East Bengal -- without fielding a foreign player -- but then losses against Dempo, Mumbai FC and the latest against Pailan Arrows, has raised questions.

Alvares understands his team must improve or questions will be asked. “The Pailan Arrows match was very disappointing. The players did not stick to the plan and did what they liked. They just lobbed the ball when everyone knows we like to start moves right from the goalkeeper,” said Alvares.

Sporting Clube take on the might of Pune FC in their eighth round clash at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Tuesday.

“There have been instances where full points were there for the taking. We cannot afford to play so carelessly. If you ask me personally, we should have killed the match as a contest (against Arrows) in the first 45 minutes itself,” said Alvares.

Pune FC, on the other hand, were forced to come from behind and steal a point against lowly-ranked United Sikkim Football Club.

South Sudan striker James Moga scored the fastest goal in the I-League and he will continue to pose a major threat for the home side.

Interestingly, Moga played for Sporting Clube last year and was their leading goal-scorer. Pune FC are placed seventh with ten points from six matches.
