umdinger on the cards as Prayag United host Churchill

KOLKATA, Nov 27: The new Dutch coach of Prayag United SC Eelco Schattorie appears to have the problem of setting a disheveled house in order ahead of the team’s crucial match against strong Churchill Brothers at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday. The two teams are close colleagues in the League standings with Churchill Brothers in the third place with 15 points while Prayag United sits firmly in the fourth spot with 14 points.

Schattorie had a dream initiation guiding Prayag United to the second biggest win (10-1) of the I-League history (against United Sikkim FC) when he took up the reins of the club from another successful coach Sanjoy Sen. The reason attributed for Sen’s unceremonious departure was that the Indian coach was finding it difficult to handle a cast of high profile players. The Prayag United management finalised the services of Schattorie, who came with wide recommendations, but the problem of tackling its high-profile foreigners became more real under the Dutch coach.

The club has ‘show-caused’ Carlos Hernandes, the Costa Rican World Cupper, for breach of discipline in the team’s previous match against Salgaocar. The player is yet to reply to the clarifications sough about his “unwarranted behaviour and a public show of disregard,” which the player apparently did unable to agree to his replacement midway in the match against Salgaocar. “Carlos is our player and he has to follow the discipline of the club. We will think about fielding him in the match against Churchill Brothers only once he replies to the explanations sought by the club,” said Schattorie after the team’s practice today.

Hernandes did not attend the team practice and has given a medical certificate to the team management saying that he is not well. The Coacta Rican may well have to warm the bench as the club seems inclined to apply an undeclared one-match suspension on the player.
The Prayag United coach also has to worry about a spate of injuries to more of his ‘first-team’ players like Shylo Malswamtluanga and New Zealander Kayne Vincent. Dipak Mondal, who adds strength to the team’s right flank, has gone back home in Jamshedpur on hearing his mother’s death and is unlikely to be present in the match. “I have to look at the injuries and personal grief of an important player. We have to think about getting the right balance on the flanks in their absence,” Schattorie said.

Regarding his opponent Schattories said, “Churchill Brothers are a good side and are positioned above us in the league standings. But it is our home mach and we would like to pick up the maximum number of points from the match,” Schattorie said. Prayag United has won twice and drawn once (1-1 in the last match against Salgaocar) in its last three outings and hopes to continue with the unbeaten record.

Mohammead Rafiq may join Ranty Martins in the team’s offensive now that Hernandes is uncertain and there will be some more likely changes in the shape of James Singh, and Chinta Chandrasekhar Rao to fill the blanks created by injury.

Churchill Brothers technical director Sunbhash Bhowmick, who hails from the city, is well aware of the conditions and also the artificial turf of the Salt Lake Stadium. Bhowmick had a long and successful stint with various city clubs and would utilise that insight for Churchill’s advantage.

“Ranty is a very good striker and they also have a creative player like Carlos (Hernandes). We will have to be extra cautious against our opponent,” Bhowmick said. “But it will be good for us Beto (Roberto Mendes Silva) make a comeback to strengthen our side. We also have players like Henry Antchouet, Billal Nazzarine and Akram Moghrabi, who can change the complexion of any match,” said Bhowmick assessing his team.

Beto had the missed the previous match against Shillong Lajong owing to injury. “My boys have regained much of their confidence with the win against Shillong Lajong (1-0) in the last round,” Bhowmick said. “I always believe in picking up a point form an away match and hope to do that tomorrow,” he added.

“Eelco is a Dutch coach but he prefers the Brazilian style of play. The team tries to utilise the space well and that we would like to restrict in the match,” Bhowmick said. “Prayag United is the third force in Calcutta football having taken the position of Mohammedan Sporting after East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. They are force to reckon with and we will have task cut out against them,” Bhowmick added.

Beto, who is returning from an injury, said Ranty remains a big factor of worry. “I have been seeing him (Ranty) for the last six year. He is dangerous inside the box but we also looking to return with full points from the match,” Beto said.
