Confident Arrows ready for East Bengal challenge

KALYANI, Dec 29 : East Bengal looked for a return to winning form and rejoin the title race ahead of their 13th round I-League encounter against the young Pailan Arrows, which will be played in Kalyani Stadium on Sunday (December 30).

East Bengal had slipped a bit from their elevated position in the league standings when the team suffered their second loss of the tournament visiting Mumbai FC in the previous round.

Arrows – the developmental side of the All India Football Federation – could not manage anything better compared to their upcoming opponents.

The youthful side launched to nurture the future players of the national side, put up a spirited show before falling 1-2 against the league leader Dempo SC.

“It is important that we get three points from tomorrow’s match.  It does not matter who our opposition is but we must perform to our potential to get back the winning rhythm,” East Bengal coach Trevor James Morgan said.

Morgan, who underwent surgery on both his hands, came from the hospital to attend the team practice on Saturday. “We lost against Mumbai FC in the previous round and now we need a win to get ourselves back in a good position in the league table,” Morgan said.

“Our side-back Saumik Dey is uncertain with injury while in central defence we will be missing Uga Okpara because of suspension. I hope to find the right substitutions and give our best in the match,” Morgan said adding that stopper-back Gurwinder Singh has recovered from typhoid and has resumed practice.

Morgan will have to depend on the two of his other foreigners – midfielder Orji Penn and striker Edeh Chidi – to get the winning rhythm back.

Arrows practiced without their Australian coach Arthur Papas, who will be joining the team after Christmas holidays on Saturday evening. Assistant coach Sujit Chakraborty said the absence of Uga Okpara will be an advantage as his team does not have any foreigner.

“We are the only side in the tournament which plays with Indian players. It is an advantage if the opponent has lesser number of foreigners,” Chakraborty said.

“We played well against Dempo SC our team lost because of our players’ relative inexperience. We committed some silly errors which was utilised by our opponent. We hope not to repeat those errors against East Bengal,” the Arrows coach said.

“East Bengal is one of the title contenders and that will give my boys extra motivation to perform better. Our team is looked upon as the future of Indian football. The players look for the opportunity to prove themselves and the match against East Bengal will be one such opportunity,” Chakraborty said.

The kick-off is at 2.00pm.
