Chidi’s hat-trick helps East Bengal drub Salgaocar

MAPUSA, January 5, 2013 :  Kingfisher East Bengal broke their Goa jinx in the I-League after crafting a 4-1 win over Salgaocar Football Club at the Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Saturday (January 5).

East Bengal had never won against Salgaocar in Goa for the past 12 years and on Tuesday when they went down to a goal by Marcus Mascarenhas in the ninth minute, it seemed a familiar script. But the Federation Cup champions turned the match on its head with a hat-trick from Edeh Chidi and another one from Robin Singh.

The teams were tied 1-1 at half time.

Salgaocar got a dream start when they had their noses in front in the ninth minute itself. A nice interplay just outside the box saw Milagres Gonsalves flick the ball to Marcus Mascarenhas who did well to evade a defender and then slam the ball past East Bengal goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal.

East Bengal were rattled by the goal but soon regained composure. They scored the equalizer in the 35th minute when a long ball from Ishfaq Ahmed inside the Salgaocar danger zone was nicely trapped by Chidi and then slammed into the goal.

In the second half, East Bengal grew in confidence and it was only a matter of time before they surged ahead for the first time in the match. That moment came in the 59th minute when Penn Orji made a fine run from the right and essayed the ball to Robin Singh who struck an impressive volley from close range.

East Bengal made sure all the points were safely in their pocked in the 65th minute as Salgaocar made the mistake of appealing for an offside even as Chidi trapped an overhead ball from captain Ishfaq Ahmed and had the easiest of finishes.

Chidi’s third goal in the 81st minute had class written all over it as the Nigerian striker curled a ball into the goal from just outside the box.

East Bengal now have 27 points in their kitty and are placed third behind Churchill Brothers and Pune FC, both of whom have 28 points each.
