New Delhi, April 12: The First Phase of the Second Division League concluded in Bangalore on Friday. The second phase which will also be played at the same venue will kick-off on Monday April 15.
Kolkata based clubs Mohammedan Sporting and Bhawanipore FC occupy the top two spots with 10 and 9 points respectively from five outings. Mumbai Tigers also stay on 9 points but are currently on third spot with head-to-head tally separating them and Bhawanipore.
The points table is a reflection of how closely the six clubs have fought for a place in next year’s I-League.
Mumbai Tigers started their final phase campaign on a bright note, winning their first two encounters against Langsning FC and Southern Samity – the margins staying 1-0 and 3-0 respectively. But a bad day in office for the Mumbai based team against Rangdajied United FC when they lost 1-3 – saw Mohammedan Sporting pip them to the top of the tree.
The Tigers, however, came back into contention with a solitary goal victory over Mohammedan Sporting in their last match.
Bhawanipore, on the other hand, have remained unbeaten throughout the first phase thus sitting pretty behind Mohammedan with only one point bridging the arch-rivals. Their 3-3 draw against fourth-placed Langsning was a riveting contest to say the least.
The team depends a lot on Brazilian Jose Ramirez Barreto who have been scoring goals at will in every match.
The black and the white, Mohammedan Sporting, have been chasing a dream – of coming back into the Elite Division. The Club enjoys a rich history and enjoy a huge fan base all over the country.
In the last match of the Round, Langsning pulled off a superb victory to move to the fourth spot edging Rangdajied in a high-scoring 4-2 triumph.
