VASCO, April 4: Salgaocar Football Club trampled upon Prayag United Sports Club’s top three ambitions with a methodical 1-0 victory in a 23rd round I-League clash at the refurbished Tilak Maidan, Vasco, on Thursday.
Captain Luciano Sobrosa’s impressive side volley proved to be the essential difference between the two sides as Salgaocar hung on dearly for the three points.
Having long given up on the title, Prayag went into the game hoping to increase their points tally and get closer to the likes of Churchill Brothers, East Bengal and even Pune FC. But without two of their foreign players, including Nigerian striker Ranty Martins, the visitors never really threatened throughout the game.
Prayag United started brightly though with Costa Rican midfielder Carlos Hernandez giving a good account of himself in the middle. One of his brilliant through ball had even found striker Kayne Vincent who slammed it past the onrushing goalkeeper, only for the assistant referee to flag him for offside.
Salgaocar took time to settle down but when they did, there were chances aplenty as Josimar Martins, Francis Fernandes and Milagres Gonalves ran riot.
Francis, in particular, had two quick chances. But at first he flicked the ball wide of the target and, minutes later, made the mistake of shooting from long when nobody was chasing him.
Prayag’s other chance of the half was when Deepak Mondal’s fleeting cross from the right was missed by Vincent infront of goal.
In the second session, Salgaocar continued dictating terms and soon enough got the goal they were looking for. A free kick saw the hadworking Randeep Kumar float the ball beautifully inside the danger zone where Prayag United defenders simply looked, allowing Luciano to side volley from close range.
Salgaocar now have 27 points in their kitty while Prayag United have been left in fourth place with 35 points.
