Champions Churchill Brothers sign off in style

PUNE, May 12: Churchill Brothers finished their 2012-13 campaign with a 3-0 victory against Air India, at the Balewadi Sports Complex Stadium here on Sunday (May 12).

With Churchill already winning the I-League title and Air India already being relegated, there wasn’t much at stake in the Round 26 match. But Churchill gave handful of their supporters some moments to cheer as Bineesh Balan headed in a Lenny Rodrigues cross from left in the 38th minute to put the Goan team 1-0 ahead.

Jaison Vales scored one minute from the full time and Henri Antchouet made it 3-0 in the second minute of injury time as Churchill rounded off its season with a win.

This win took Churchill Brothers’ point tally to 55, clear three ahead of runner-up team, Pune FC. Air India ended at No 13th position with 19 points.

But for that goal from Balan, the first half wasn’t much eventful. None of the teams pressed for the goal for the first 35 minutes before Churchill seemed to have warmed up for the show.

Lenny moved from the left and raced up before sending a neat cross in the box. Bineesh Balan and Lamine Tamba were in position, but it was Balan who headed in the ball past Air India goalkeeper Jagroop Singh.

Spurred by the lead, Churchill then began playing more openly. Sunil Chhetri  and Lamine Tamba raided Air India post several times, but the Senegalese failed to find the target on each of the occasions.

In the 65th minute, Balan created a gem of a chance when he raced from the right flank and sent the ball to Tamba in the box. When Tamba saw himself being crowded by Air India defenders, he released the ball for Balal Arezou, but the Afghani missed a sitter when he had just the goalkeeper to beat.

Churchill’s second goal came from Jaison Vales when he chanced upon a loose ball in the box before Henri rounded off the score-line with a powerful shot from just outside the box.
