Lajong shock East Bengal in their final game

KOLKATA, May 12:  Shillong Lajong FC beat local favourites East Bengal 1-0 to register their first away victory in the concluding round of the I-League in Kalyani Stadium on Sunday (May 12). Japanese striker Taisuke Matsugae struck the only goal of the match to give Lajong FC full points.

The match was decided in the very first quarter of the action when Matsugae put the visitors ahead with a spectacular finishing. With East Bengal pushed to the third spot by Pune FC, the host did not show much resolve and failed to produce any meaningful chances. The visitor made the most of this laxity on the other end and attacked more vigorously.

Shillong Lajong, who looked rejuvenated under Thangboi Singto’s coaching, maintained the momentum after the break as the hosts found it tough to get its own game.

East Bengal coach Trevor Morgan made a three quick of chances in the attack in the second half bringing in Australian Andrew Barisic and the Nigerians Edeh Chidi and Penn Orji . But Lajong FC defending their lone goal lead doggedly, East Bengal failed to find the equalizer.

Lajong FC ended their campaign in 11th position with 28 points while East Bengal finished third with 47 points.
