Pune, July 6: I-League club Pune FC officially unveiled Mike Snoei as their Head Coach for the 2013-14 season on Saturday (July 6, 2013).
Snoei, who took over the reins from Derrick Pereira, was all praise about the club’s philosophy to promote and develop youth in the coming years, also hinting at the same time that he will bring about some changes into the system.
In his first official Press Conference since taking charge of the I-League outfit, the Dutchman, who has been the Head Coach of Eredivisie Club Vitesse Arnhem, said: “Results are definitely important. I personally hate to lose and want to introduce the same mentality in my players.”
“I am happy to be in India, especially in Pune. I remember the first meeting with owner Nandan Piramal, where he stressed on the club’s philosophy. My interest in this job is due to this particular view and I am willing to put in a lot of energy to achieve our goals,” the 49-year old added.
He further explained, “I have done my research and want to help the club to take the next step. Pune FC has shown progress every year. Our collective goal is to develop youngsters. Our academy has done a fantastic job over the past couple of years winning consecutive Under-20 I-League championships.”
Pune FC for the record, finished second last season in the I-League apart from bagging the I-League U-20 Tournament for the second consecutive time.
On his targets at Pune FC, Snoei informed, “Firstly, we are looking to sign good foreign players who would fit into our system. After the squad is finalised we will come up with realistic targets.”
“We hope to create a right mix of youth and experienced players. This, in turn, will create a situation wherein youngsters will learn with quality players. A good overall football program will help create a better future for the club,” he added.
Snoei said that Youth Development is the way forward. “Our main objective is to develop youngsters at the club. In this season, you will see good young players getting a fair chance in the first team. Striking the right balance is of utmost importance.”
Answering an array of questions about the feted Dutch brand of Total Football, Snoei admitted that being brought up through a Dutch system he was comfortable employing a similar brand of attractive football at Pune FC.
“In Netherlands, we grow up wanting to play offensive football with proper methods. Every country has a different culture and a way of playing. But it all depends on the team and adaptation,” he said.
“We have the basic targets in our mind and if we work in a proper system with patience we will definitely achieve them. However, primarily, we would like to play attractive football and try to win trophies with it,” he added.
In his message to the fans, Snoei maintained, “Fans are the most important part of a football club. I assure them that we will give our best to win trophies this season with a better footballing philosophy.”
