League leaders wary of Lajong threat

MARGAO, Nov 9: Dempo Sports Club coach Armando Colaco admits he is mighty scared of Shillong Lajong Football Club as the two teams square-up in an I-League clash at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Saturday.

Dempo are leading the league table with 10 points from four matches and are among the three teams not to have tasted defeat. But Colaco is wary of the threat Shillong Lajong will pose despite the visitors not having lost to them since the start of the competition.

“My fear is not Shillong Lajong, but what they are capable of doing. Remember, they defeated Prayag United in the last game (at home) and to my eyes Prayag United is the strongest team in the league. We have to be wary,” said Colaco.

Dempo are unbeaten and it is not a surprise that coach Colaco is pleased as punch with the team’s progress.

“We did well in the second half against East Bengal. I would say we were unlucky not to win that game because we were technically much better. We equalized and should have been awarded a penalty,” explained the Dempo coach.

The Dempo coach said he has a midfield conundrum because he has too many good players to choose from. Climax Lawrence and Peter Carvalho have been the first choice central midfielders but with Godwin Franco also knocking on the door and former Arsenal midfielder Rohan Ricketts also making a case for his inclusion, Colaco has a tough choice to make.

“It’s a good thing but the players must realize that whatever decision I take, it is in the interest of the team,” said Colaco.

Shillong Lajong, under Desmond Bulpin, has given a good account of themselves and have been difficult to break when playing at home. Surprisingly, their only loss has come against lowly-placed Sporting Clube de Goa, but, as Colaco pointed out, their win against the mighty Prayag United means they have the quality to trouble any opposition.
