MDS exhibition will serve as a reality check for the standard of football in Manipur

Imphal, June 27: It was only few years back that Manipuri players had made a significant mark in the country’s football scene and made their presence felt in all the major football clubs of India.

That has become a thing of the past, as the state players could no longer dominate the national scene as it used to before.

Very unfortunate to say, but yes, the standard of football in the state is on a decline. There may be numerous reasons for this decline, for which only the experts and the football aficionados will know the best.

The exhibition match that MDS is hosting along with the AMFA AND Football Edge, Kolkatta on June 30 at the sprawling field of Khuman Lampak Main Stadium comes at a very right time.

Apart from introducing the football lovers of the state some good football action, with the best of the country representing FPAI XI taking on with the best of the state MDS Chargers XI, the match will also serve as a reality-check for the standard of our football and the quality of our players.

It will be worth mentioning some of the Manipuri-born players that will represent the state on the big day.

James Singh needs no introduction in the Manipuri football scene. Born of March 1, 1985, this seasoned player is presently playing for Mumbai FC. Before this, he played for Mc Dowells Mohun Bagan.

Subhas Singh is another talented Manipuri player who was seen in the last three seasons at Pune FC.

He also played in centre forward position at the Indian Under-23 Olympic team and national senior team camp.

He will play for Shillong Lajong in the next season. Naoba Singh is 25-year old Manipuri player who has been playing for the last three seasons with Kingfisher East Bengal.

Before that, he played for Churchill Brothers and also for the Indian U-23 Olympic team.

Born on January 10, 1988, Reisangmei Vashum played for the last three seasons for Kingfisher East Bengal. Before that, he had a short stint at Churchill Brothers.

On the other hand, Basant Singh is a promising keeper not only for the state, but for the entire North East region. Born on March3, 1990, he was the goalkeeper for Shillong Lajong in the last season.

He also has the experience of playing for three big clubs of the state. (Courtesy: The People's Chronicle)
