WOMEN FOOTBALL IN MANIPUR

Courtesy: All Manipur Football Association

With the introduction of Women Football in India in 1975 under the banner of Women Football Federation of India (WFFI)Manipur also stepped in the arena with the patronage of All Manipur Sports Association (AMSA), the body that controlled all disciplines in the State.

In 1976, following the principles of “one Association one Discipline”, Manipur Women Football Association (MWFA) was formed and affiliated to WFFI.  And, women footballing activities continued in the State.

However, it may recall a FIFA decision of 19th May 1984 in Zurich for a turn came in the Country.  The decision directed “all footballing activities thus also women’s football and their integration in the National Association” and finally evolved two possible solutions:

a) The direct integration of women’s football as a special section belonging to the National Association, or
b) A mere independent organization remaining under the control of National Associations.

Thus, FIFA directed the National Associations to create harmonious development of Women’s football within the big family of FIFA.  On 22 May, 1985 the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) directed all the Asian Ladies Football Federation that at the National Level the women football be brought under the control of National Associations by adopting either of the two possible solutions evolved by the Technical Department of FIFA.

Following this, In India AIFF was assigned the task of controlling women’s football.

And, consequent upon AIFF’s directions, the All Manipur Football Association took over the activities of women football in Manipur in 1991.  Since then, tremendous achievements and commendable standards in women’s football have been achieved.

In 1992, the 1st Sr. Women’s National Football championship of AIFF was held at Imphal.  Since then 19 Sr. Nationals have been organized by the AIFF.  Out of which Manipur won 16 times,
2 times draw and 1 semi-finalist.

Two clubs from Manipur participated in the Federation Cup of AIFF in 1992 but discontinued holding thereafter.

In the meantime, in response to FIFA/AFC the WFFI had merged into the mainstream of AIFF on Dec. 14, 1996.  As a result, women’s football in the country and also in the State resulted to marked progress.

The All Manipur Football Association has been initiating concrete calendar, such as, Football Development Programme for U-12 & U-14 Girls, Sub-Jr., Junior, Senior Inter District Tournaments, Winners cup for women.  And, under the supervision of the State Association, the District Associations carry out their regular programmes, competitions, etc.

With the advent of AFC Vision India Project Manipur in 2006, the footballing activities at the grassroots schools made tremendous achievements.  State U-13/U-14 Girls occupy a large place in the National Squad for AFC U-13/U-14 Festival of Footballs since its introduction.

The State Teams are participating continuously without any break since the AIFF National Championships were introduced in the country – Senior, Junior, Sub-Junior.  And, the results are satisfactory.

Lastly, the present trend of women football in the State is based on the initiative and actions of the AIFF.  In case the AIFF slowed down its activities / competitions at the National Level, it affects the standard of the State too.
